The Best Story Apps Reviewed

For whatever reason I am addicted to those mobile story games. It's literally just reading with the occasional choice but I cannot stop. I've downloaded quite a few and I wanted to have a look at which of them is worth your time and which really, really aren't!

Episode

This is the first I ever downloaded and was, I think, possibly the actual first of its kind. It was pretty good when I first downloaded it but I honestly feel kinda bored of it at this point. There are a few celebrity stories on here like Demi Lovato's Path to Fame which are good but the requirement for paid choices really drags down the games options.

Choices

Probably my favourite at the moment. It's big on making paid decisions to get all the good stuff but you can usually get a pretty good story without paying (thank goodness). Chapters of stories release weekly and I am in love with three of them at the moment and the waiting for each chapter actually works in its favour by keeping the excitement without overindulging the story. The romances are usually pretty strong and you do have a good choice of male/female love interests. The Freshman even has a good LGBTQ sub-plot which I appreciated.

What's Your Story?

Easily the best for playing through stories that are already a thing. Pretty much all the stories are set within movies or TV shows you'll already know and love like Charmed or CSI. So I already felt invested from the beginning and they do a great job of carrying the old characters into the story - Charmed for example felt like they got the original sisters right whilst also adding a whole new story for your character. They also let you choose at the beginning whether you want all male love interests, all female or a mixture of the two which is a nice touch. The non-paid choices are often a little ridiculous however and it becomes frustrating to watch your character do stupid things because you cant afford to do the sensible thing. This is most apparent in Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer because the paid-choices could literally be the difference between saving your friends life or just ditching them.

City of Love

This is just one story but there are no paid choices. None. And I'm more impressed by that than I should be. You never get to customise your character but the variety of choices is pretty strong and I get the feeling it would be a good one to replay differently later. You can pay for extra energy as you are limited to a certain amount of playing time each day but in my opinion its worth it to just stick with the energy you are given and although it often stops you on a momentous decision you are able to jump back in the next day without difficulty.

The Arcana

This is my most recent download and I haven't played much of it yet but it has quite a lot going for it. Like City of Love it is just one story and you don't get to customise a character (although you do get to choose your characters pronouns which includes an option for "they"). The story itself is already quite compelling and whilst there are paid-choices ignoring them hasn't so far affected my enjoyment of the story. I don't feel like my character is losing out by not doing them although there is probably some deeper story I might be missing.

Love Island The Game

Ok so obviously we all know how obsessed I am with Love Island so of course when they released a game I was straight on that. It is super buggy and super frustrating with how limited the choices are but this is the one game on the list I've been able to make paid-choices on. Not by paying mind you but my game glitched and I lost my entire story so the lovely team gave me enough gems (the currency of the game) to play through the story again without it becoming stale. And it was kinda great. I got really, really attached to my character and to all the others and was crazy invested in winning the game. They've said they'll be doing a season 2 of it next year and there should be some additional content for this years story but until then I've finished it which is a shame.

Chapters

The weakest on the list for me and only worth mentioning because I played through one story I really enjoyed which was called Uninvited. It has in its favour that the stories all seem to be written by actual authors and the writing quality is definitely there. But because the stories are so fixed in place you don't get a lot of choice in anything else. There's no variety in love interests and whilst you do make choices they don't seem to make any difference to the actual stories. I enjoyed Uninvited but I get the feeling I made zero impact on the story and was just reading it.

Obviously I've played a lot of these. I love choose your own adventure books and these are like the mobile app version of that. Because they're all initially free to download they do tend to rely strongly on pay-to-play micro-transactions and it can be incredibly annoying to be taken out of the enjoyment of the story by the fact that no you can't afford to actually pay for your character to make a sensible choice.

Have you played any of these or do any of them appeal to you? Or do you kinda think I've gone absolutely bananas? Even when they're bad these are so entertaining!
